9 Top Trends in the Garden for 2024

  1. 2024 is all about the outdoors: Being outside is in!
  2. Budgets. Makeovers on a budget are big news. Gone are the magnificent makeovers with the price tag to match. This year we are recycling, upcycling and doing it ourselves.
  3. And it’s all about the drama! Dramatic is in. There will be no shrinking violets in the garden this year, we are going to be big and bold. The takeaway advice for an on-trend garden in 2024 is make your backdrop a statement black or grey and your blooms bright. Orange and red flowers really pop against a dramatic backdrop.
  4. Decking: it’s still very much in but only if you give it a facelift. Why not embrace the drama here too and stain it black, grey or anthracite?
  5. Kitchens: It’s not ‘get out of the kitchen’, it’s more ‘get the kitchen outside’. This year exterior kitchens will become a huge trend, and they don’t have to cost the earth if you’re handy and know the materials to source. Why not try scaffolding boards to keep the cost down?
  6. Living walls: They’re set to stay for 2024 and Shou Sugi Ban cladding or steel could be just the materials to source for a dramatic look if you can afford them.
  7. Garden studios and outdoor rooms: Yes, the pandemic brought them to the fore but they’re not going away. Not only do these massively raise the value and desirability of a property, but they are also practical and really enhance spring and summer entertaining opportunities.
  8. Wooden pergolas have long been considered a desirable addition to any garden regardless of garden size. If you already have one, why not update the look and paint the underside black? You’ll be surprised by how much this can enhance it, while protecting the wood. Plus, it’s a great backdrop for string lighting.
  9. Shou Sugi Ban cladding can add dramatic style to your garden if used to create feature walls, water features or living walls. However, these materials are expensive, so why not create the look on a budget using composite cladding or Douglas Fir cladding and staining it midnight black for a real wow factor. Plant a trumpet vine in front and when the flowers come out you have a stunning effect. Alternatively, plant a sea of lavender in front. Don’t forget, any offcuts can be used to create planters.
